All of these courses, workshops and seminars can be delivered at your radio station. Most sessions can also be delivered online by live webinar which saves on travel and accommodation costs and also means participants do not have to be away from the business too long.
Basic Presenter Skills
This is a one-day workshop designed to give tips, tools and techniques for better music radio presentation aimed primarily at newer and younger presenters. The aim is to give radio presenters the skills to encourage listeners to listen for longer and come back for more. Topics include: personality presentation, understanding research, show preparation, content generation, contest ideas, benchmarking, using phones and texts, getting great callers, forward promotions, 'teasing', production and understanding the keys to success. Coaching and Critiquing Radio Presenters
Effective coaching of presenters is the key skill of today's radio programmer - but too few of them have the knowledge and confidence to do it properly. This one-day workshop aimed at programmers and producers covers both the theory and psychology of coaching, managing and inspiring creative individuals and includes practical critiquing of real airchecks including a comprehensive list of do's and don'ts to motivate creative presenters in regular 'snoop sessions'
The Rules for Presenters and Journalists
For UK stations, this is a one-day seminar covering both legal and regulatory compliance issues. It includes everything a presenter or journalist needs to know to stay out of trouble with the law and Ofcom. The legal part covers defamation, privilege and contempt while the regulatory section covers the Broadcasting Code, harm, offence and competitions as well as a discussion about listener trust. Lots of examples are used to show things that have gone wrong in the past and why. This seminar can be tailored for either groups of presenters or journalists.
Basic News Writing
Techniques of writing for the ear and not the eye. This one-day workshop is designed to sharpen and improve the quality of writing radio news bulletins to aid listener understanding with tips, techniques and practical exercises together with easy-to-remember rules for radio writing. The aim is to make news bulletins more compelling, impactful, relevant and easy to understand for listeners. Topics include: the art of simplicity, language and grammar, jargon and clichés, context, creativity, attribution and avoiding offence.

LISTENER ADVISORY BOARDS |
| |
Listener Advisory Boards - or LABs - are a cost-effective way of radio stations getting feedback from a small group of listeners.
Because participants are not scientifically selected, they are not proper focus groups. Nevertheless, when well-moderated, they are an excellent way of hearing the views of your station's biggest fans as well as discovering more about their lifestyle and trying out new ideas.
Paul Chantler is an expert independent moderator of LABs and has extensive experience of running them for a variety of stations. The skill is in not simply asking a list of questions but knowing when and in what ways to probe deeper and ask follow-up questions.
He can advise on all aspects of LABs from recruitment of participants to the sessions itself and important follow-up work to turn the results into action on air.

OUTPUT AUDITS |
| |
Week-Long Station Audit
Paul also offers a complete radio station audit where he monitors and analyses output across a week studying all aspects including music, news, presenters, imaging, positioning and branding.
The audit contains independent and objective analysis of your station's strengths and weaknesses. A detailed written report contains specific advice and recommendations and is an excellent way for station management to review progress and determine the path for future success.
If you are a chief executive who wants a new and fresh perspective on your station's sound, Paul can provide a confidential report for your eyes only.
Two Day Station Monitoring
Paul offers a comprehensive 16-hour monitoring service for your station. He comes to your market on an agreed day and does a complete 6am to 7pm monitor of your output. He stays overnight and also monitors your breakfast show on the second day. Over lunch, he gives a verbal overview which is then followed up by a full written report within a week.
News Audit
News and information are important parts of a radio station's output. Paul will appraise a sample of your news output across a day or a week which analyses content, style and presentation.
The news audit contains a written report highlighting strengths and weaknesses compared to rival stations. It also provides specific advice and recommendations on how bulletins can be improved effectively.
|
 |
MARKET VISITS |
| |
Paul visits your market and monitors your station and your competitors for the first day. On the second day, he works with management and staff to improve your output. You receive a full written report within a week including an Action Plan. You receive three visits a year with extra visits as necessary.

WEBINARS |
| |
Paul Chantler is pleased to offer training courses and workshops via internet 'webinars'
It means participants can take part from their desktop or laptop computer anywhere in the world without their employers having to spend on the travel and accommodation usually associated with regular training courses.
What is a 'webinar'?
A webinar is simply another name for an online seminar. The host delivers live and interactive training via a specially set up and confidential website.
How is it cost effective?
Webinars save money on travel and accommodation which would otherwise be incurred for face-to-face training at a central location. Both trainer and trainees can sit at their desks and take part in the webinar from almost anywhere in the world where the internet is available. This is, of course, very environmentally friendly as there is no travel for either trainer or trainees. Training via webinar is also efficient in time too, removing the need to take trainees out of your business for a full day.
How does a webinar work?
Trainees join the webinar from their office or home computer and dial into a simultaneous conference call. They can see the host via a webcam and the host can see them too if they have a webcam set up.
What can be done during a webinar?
The webinar technology allows Powerpoint presentations to be shown, audio and video to be played and written notes and illustrations to be made on a virtual whiteboard which can be seen by all. Interaction takes place via the simultaneous phone line conference.
Can webinars be recorded?
The complete webinar - both audio and what is shown on screen - can be easily recorded and emailed to participants, moderators, seniors and trainees who may have missed a session for instant playback.
How long do webinars last?
They can last several hours - but our experience in pioneering the webinars in the UK shows the best length for a training webinar is between 60 and 75 minutes.
What webinar subjects are being offered for radio stations and groups?
Paul Chantler is offering three radio programming seminars:
 |
Radio Presenter Basic Skills (3 x 1 hour webinars) - designed to give tips, tools and techniques for better music radio presentation, aimed primarily at newer and younger presenters. The aim is to give radio DJs the skills to encourage listeners to listen longer and come back for more. Topics include: show preparation, contest ideas, benchmarking, using phones and SMS, forward promotion, 'teasing', production, using research and the keys to success. Participants will learn basic presentation skills, improve the quality of their presentation, discover new ideas, stand out from their competitors and explore different ways of doing things on air. |
 |
Coaching and Critiquing Radio Presenters (2 x 1 hour webinars) - designed to improve the ability of programme directors and managers to successfully coach and critique their presenters to achieve greater success. The webinar includes details of the theory and psychology of coaching creative people as well as practical advice about how to coach on a day-to-day basis including a comprehensive list of 'do's and don'ts' about motivating creative DJs |
 |
Basic News Writing (2 x 1 hour webinars) - designed to improve the quality of writing radio news bulletins to aid listener understanding with tips, techniques and practical exercises together with easy-to-remember rules for radio writing. The aim is to make news bulletins more compelling, relevant and easy to understand for listeners. Topics include: the art of simplicity, language and grammar, jargon and clichés, context, attribution and avoiding offence. |
Is there a limit on the number of people who can take part?
Technically up to 25 people can join a webinar but our pioneering experience in the UK suggests that the optimum number of participants is about 12. This means that each webinar costs approximately £82 per participant.
Have webinars been used before by United Radio?
Paul Chantler put together a highly successful series of webinars for emerging programmers in GMG Radio - the UK's third biggest radio group. A dozen junior programmers took part in a series of six webinars over 12 weeks in spring 2009 equipping them with skills for them to become programme directors.
